Webinar 1: Building Chinese Cultural Competence - Friday 8 May at 11:30am (AEST)

(Please note this webinar is a repeat from 08 April 2020)

Social distancing may be the new norm, but that shouldn’t suggest we can't use this time to develop our skills. ABSA, in partnership with CLCA, have developed this webinar to answer the important question: as record numbers of Chinese students are now enrolled at Australian schools, what can we do to enable boarding school staff to build meaningful relationships with students from China?

Cultural competence will give you the confidence to interact with people of different cultural backgrounds.

This webinar will help you understand:

  • The social environment and family structure in China, and the effects on parenting and child development
  • The real reason Chinese students are coming to Australia
  • What happens when Chinese families face up to culture shock in a foreign environment
  • Understanding how cultural assumptions influence communication effectiveness

Webinar 2: Chinese Lifestyle: Understanding Where Our Chinese Students Are Coming From - Tuesday 26 May at 11:00am (AEST)

It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child. In order to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the child to thrive, we must understand their village. Jing will share some of his personal stories, in particular how his two ‘Fasian’ (fake Asian) children interacted with their Chinese cousins during a trip to China, to help us understand modern China and family lifestyle. Jing sits on a number of corporate advisory boards to provide strategic advice, and has been involved in a number of sector specific capability building programs.

This webinar will help you understand:

  • One Child policy and its effects.
  • Rapid social changes and impact on average Chinese families.
  • Regional differences in China.
  • Attitude of Chinese parents toward Western education.

Webinar 3: Effective Communication: Getting Inside the Mind of Chinese People - Tuesday 9 June 2020 at 2:00pm (AEST)

You might be a staff member trying to encourage boarders’ participation, or trying to explain school policies to the parents and guardians of Chinese students. It’s the same age-old question for everyone: How can we communicate better? Jing will introduce some tools and tactics to improve your active listening, presenting and negotiating skills in this session. Jing sits on a number of corporate advisory boards to provide strategic advice, and has been involved in a number of sector specific capability building programs.

This webinar will help you understand:

  • How to influence decision making and steer the other side towards a desired action.
  • Identifying pain points, then clarifying, demystifying and simplifying your message.
  • Interpreting cultural differences and uniformities in behaviour, and taking control of digital transformation.
